Get Free Access to Online Newspaper Articles with a Google Hack

Posted on 20:21 by Unknown

Get Free Access to Online Newspaper Articles with a Google Hack

Online newspaper websites like The Wall Street Journal and Financial Times are part of the First Click Free program but Google visitors can still get free access to all the news articles without registering or subscribing.

WSJ Premium ContentOnline newspaper sites like the Financial Times require users to sign-in if they want to read more than one article on their site. The New York Times too had such a restriction in place earlier but they seem to have dropped that requirement now.
The Wall Street Journal, on the other hand, is a subscription-based site. They do offer free access to some of news stories but all the premium content is behind a pay-wall and therefore available only to paid subscribers.
Since these newspaper websites are part of the "First Click Free" program, someone visiting them via Google search can read the first page of the story without registering or subscribing. The first click is therefore "free" but the user will have to sign-in or register to read further.
First Click Free & Google Visitors
However, due to a possible bug in the implementation, the registration prompt gets bypassed for Google visitors giving them free access to all the news articles – even the premium content meant for subscribers.
It works like this. You first copy the web address of any news article that is behind the registration firewall and paste that URL into the Google Search box. Now click the first Google result and you’ll be able to read the full text of the corresponding story without registering or subscribing.

Tools to Help Simplify Social Networking management and marketing

Posted on 09:23 by Unknown

Five tools to help simplify social networking management

Takeaway: If your social media presence is becoming impossible to manage, one of these tools may help bring things under control.
Social networking has become an inevitability for businesses of all sizes. No matter what your product or service, you’re hurting yourself if you don’t have a social media presence. And as you grow, so do your social media needs. At some point, your social presence is going to become hard to manage using the standard interfaces. You will need newer and more powerful tools that are better suited for the task.
I found five low-cost (or free) tools that can help manage your social media presence. With these tools, you can handle various tasks (some offer more than others). But most important is the ability to keep track of your social accounts as well as your followers (and their mentions of you or your company/product).

1: SocialBro

SocialBro (Figure A) is available as a Google Chrome extension and as a desktop app. It allows you to get fairly fine-grained with the viewing of your Twitter accounts. SocialBro is one of my favorite tools, simply because it offers so much information and so many capabilities with Twitter. You can search users and keywords, create specific filters, find your best time to tweet, monitor hashtags, analyze competitors, and much more. You will have to create a SocialBro account (free) and then give the extension permission to access your Twitter data.

SocialBro

2: TweetDeck

TweetDeck (Figure B) is offered as a Google Chrome extension, a desktop client, and mobile clients (IOS and Android). All versions of the tool offer the same features. With TweetDeck, you can customize what you see (arranging your feeds to display the way you want), schedule tweets, monitor unlimited accounts, get notification alerts for new tweets, see media previews, handle list management, and much more.

TweetDeck

3: GroupTweet

GroupTweet (Figure C) is a unique tool that allows multiple users to post on a single Twitter account. This can quickly ease the burden of managing a social presence on Twitter. Each user that is given permission to post is displayed in the group account — individual names can be enabled or disabled. You can have unlimited contributors to an account and any Twitter client can be used with GroupTweet. For $4.99 per month (for the Premium account), you gain extra features like Tweet moderation, scheduled tweets, prioritized tweets, and multiple hashtag designation.

4: HootSuite

HootSuite (Figure D) is an outstanding tool for monitoring your brand. From a single dashboard you can manage teams, get custom analytics, manage messages, manage multiple accounts (Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Google+, and more), and get Facebook insights. There are two plans: Free and Pro ($9.99 per month). Check out the feature matrix to see which plan offers which feature. If you need more, there is also an Enterprise plan. (Contact HootSuite for more information.)

5: Seesmic

Seesmic (Figure E) is a handy tool that allows you to manage your Twitter and Facebook feeds. You can connect not only your main Facebook page but any fan page you manage. Say you have a main company page with fan pages for different services or departments. You can easily post to only those pages you want from a simple-to-use mobile or desktop client. Seesmic also allows for the scheduling of tweets and updates.

Other picks?

Managing a social media presence doesn’t have to be an overwhelming task. With the help of a few user-friendly tools, your company’s social media presence can not only be managed, but it can become far more effective.

How to Recover Deleted and Lost Files Windows Microsoft

Posted on 16:21 by Unknown

How to Recover Deleted and Lost Files

Overview

Whether you’re an IT pro, a normal home user, or a photographer, you have probably accidentally deleted an important file from a hard drive or memory card before.  Maybe you didn’t mean to delete it or maybe you did delete the file intentionally but changed your mind.  Maybe the storage device is beginning to corrupt and become unreliable. The result is always the same; panic.
In this post, we’re going to try and put your panic at ease. With Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery, virtually any file can be recovered from a storage device, generally within just a few minutes.
Recover Lost Files With Windows Data Recovery Pro
Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery will:

  • Recover lost and formatted logical drives & partitions

  • Recover accidentally deleted files

  • Recover MS Outlook and Outlook Express files

  • Fix boot Sector Corruption

  • Works with FAT and NTFS file systems

What Happens When a File is Deleted?

While the idea of dragging a file to the “Recycle Bin” seems pretty straightforward and certainly feels final, the reality is that the file doesn’t actually go anywhere.  When you delete a file, you are simply telling your computer that the file is no longer needed and your operating system simply acts as though the file isn’t there.  The deleted file will actually remain intact until the hard drive needs that space and overwrites it.
The bad news is that if you are really trying to get rid of a file, you’re going to need to do a little more than just move it to and emptying the recycle bin.  The good news is that if you accidentally deleted a file, you have a pretty good chance of recovering it.  Here’s how…
Download Windows Data Recovery Pro and Scan for Lost Files FREE!

Real World Data Recovery Scenario

Even with the recent growth of cloud storage solutions, portable and external storage devices continue to be very convenient.  Additionally, multi-gig thumb drives are about as affordable as your weekly latte budget.  So to demonstrate how to use Data Recovery Pro, we've set up a sample scenario utilizing a simple 2GB USB thumb drive.
Thumb Drive With Files
In our sample scenario, you have a 2GB thumb drive that contains several folders and documents, including a work folder which contains a folder with files from a recent convention in which you helped sell some product for your company.
Folder showing important file
Most important is an image of a graph showing some sales figures that you need to present to your boss tomorrow morning.
Folder showing missing files
What you didn’t anticipate is that your daughter has recently used the drive to transfer her recent Word document, an essay she’s writing for an upcoming final.  Whether she meant to or not, she deleted all of your files in place of her own.
Although your studious child deleted the file, there is a very good chance that the image you need is still on this storage device and can easily be recovered. All you need is some help, and that's where Windows Data Recovery Pro comes in.

Recovering Files With Data Recovery Pro

Open Stellar Phoenix Windows Data Recovery Pro. We suggest that you have administration rights when using the program.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - Step 1
Here you’re presented with several options:
  • Quick Recovery is, as the name suggests, the quickest form of data recovery.  In most cases this will be sufficient whether you are trying to recover an accidentally deleted file, or cases in which the storage device has some corruption issues.
  • Deleted File Recoverywill specifically scan for recently deleted files.  It will perform a “quick” or “deep” scan.  In my experience, the quick scan is sufficient but the deep scan certainly recovers more files.
  • Formatted/Lost File & Folder Recovery is a very comprehensive scan of the storage device. I have found that when the drive is in fact formatted, this is the best option (not surprisingly).
  • Search Lost Volume is the deepest type of scan. It searches every sector on the drive and will try and piece together lost or deleted volumes on the drive.
For our example, we’re going to select the “quick” recovery.  For starters, this will scan the drive very quickly, so rather than waiting around for the deep scan, it’s worth waiting the few seconds to see if this quick scan can find your file and if it doesn't, you can then start using the deeper (and more time consuming) scans.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - Step 2
Start the scan.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - 3
You’ll notice that it hasn’t completely recovered the original folder structure.  A deeper scan would most likely recover all of the folders as they were last set up but this doesn’t mean it can’t recover our deleted files with the quick scan.  To check, we search for the file name.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - 4
Fortunately we knew the name of the file, and Data Recovery Pro found 2 versions of the file.  We can verify that this is the right file because a thumbnail is provided.  This is useful if you can’t remember the exact name too, that way you don’t have to waste time recovering files you don’t need.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - 5
Once we have found the file, we select the file we want and then click on “recover”. This prompts us with a few options.  A nice perk is the recover to FTP server, for today we don’t need this. Instead we simply recover the file to a new folder we created on our desktop. For simplicity, I named it “Recovery”.  Inside we find images, in-tact and there for our use.

Other features and Use Cases

Windows Data Recovery Pro will also:
  • Recover deleted emails (PST and DBX files).
  • Create disk images and clones
  • Recover Data from OS drives that will no longer boot

Registration Warning

Windows Data Recovery Pro is not a free program, however you can run the scans before you are required to pay.  This means you can try it before you buy it. Simply download the program and run the scan. If you want to use Windows Data Recovery Pro to recover any files that it finds, then you can register for the product.
Recover deleted files with Stellar Data Recovery Pro - Register
In this screen shot, you can see that the program scanned a hard drive and only prompts you to register for the product after you know it can recover the files you need.

Conclusion

And that’s it!  For this example, the entire process took less than 2 minutes.  We were working with a small (2gb) USB 2.0 thumb drive.  The larger the drive and the slower the interface, the longer the scan will take.  The software is not free and requires registration.

Outlook's conversation settings lead to a more efficient Inbox

Posted on 15:23 by Unknown

Outlook's conversation settings lead to a more efficient Inbox

Takeaway: Use Outlook’s conversation view to arrange related messages into meaningful groups.
Outlook displays messages as they’re received, but there are ways to rearrange messages. For instance, you can click the Subject or From title cell to group messages by the Subject or From text, respectively. Sometimes this quick fix is adequate, but sometimes it isn’t because the subject text often changes and threads often have responses from more than just one person.

Conversation view

When things are a bit too complex for a quick sort, use conversation view, but don’t stop at enabling the view. To take full advantage of the view, go a step further and apply the settings that will make the arrangement truly efficient.
To arrange messages by conversation, click the View tab and check the show As Conversation option in the Conversations group. Then, choose All Folders or This Folder. The differences are subtle, but Outlook identifies conversations with a small triangle to the left.

To get the most out of conversation view, apply one or more of the settings. To do so, click the Conversation Settings dropdown. Perhaps the setting that provides the most insight and coverage is the one passed over the most. Be sure to check the Show Messages From Other Folders option, even if all your mail is in the Inbox. That way, Outlook will display messages you sent and stored in the Sent folder. These messages are an important part of the conversation but otherwise omitted from this view.
The Show Senders Above Subject option won’t add much to the view if your Inbox displays one-line headers. If you’re using multi-line headers, this option reverses the order of the From and Subject columns.
The third option, Always Expand Conversations is another setting that most users will want to use. Otherwise, you might lose context while browsing.
By applying the first and third settings, you completely change the view. You can see at a glance that Mary initiated a particular thread and that I (Susan) responded. That’s why you need to include that first setting. If you don’t enable this setting, you’ll see only the original message from Mary.

Many users don’t bother to view Outlook threads as conversations because they don’t seem to get too much from the arrangement. The problem is that they just don’t go far enough-viewing messages as conversations can be helpful, but you won’t always appreciate the real advantages unless you apply the appropriate settings to the conversation view.

A few extras

If you don’t want to use conversation view, you don’t have to. With a message open, you can click the Related dropdown in the Editing group to see a list of all messages related to the current one. This route won’t provide the same flexibility, but it’s handy if you want to avoid conversation view.

When using conversation view, consider positioning the reading pane to the right. Doing so is an efficient way to view all of the messages in the thread quickly. Outlook displays all of the messages in the Reading Pane regardless of its position, but viewing them on the right rather than below displays more text.
In addition, when working in conversation view, Outlook will apply many actions to all of the messages in the conversation, not just the current one. For instance, you can apply a category to a conversation by applying it to a single message. Later, when more messages in the conversation arrive, Outlook will automatically apply the same category to the incoming messages
